Solar Brayton basics

Our new video about the solar Brayton cycle has just been completed. It shows an animated model of the new Solar Field 2, and explains how the sunlight that’s focused on the top of the tower is used to create electricity.

An important feature of the Brayton cycle (or gas turbine cycle as it’s more commonly known) is that this technology doesn’t require any water. Since many of the sunniest parts of the world also have limited access to water – a fact that’s certainly true for much of Australia – this has an advantage over the other common turbine type, the Rankine (or steam turbine) cycle.

There is more information on the technology at our website. Click here to visit the CSIRO Solar Brayton Cycle project page.
