Upcoming events: Questacon careers expo, live blogging & Earth Hour

It’s a busy week for science events this week, and CSIRO Energy Technology is involved in quite a few. Here are some details of things happening in the next few days:

In high school in the Hunter Region? We might see you at the Questacon ‘Beyond School’ expo.

Questacon – the big white science museum in Canberra that’s inspired many an Aussie child to pursue science – has a travelling team coming to Newcastle. They’re hosting a science career expo for high school students that’ll be held at Newcastle City Hall all day this Wednesday and Thursday. In addition to Questacon’s usual crazy-awesome assortment of hands-on science demonstrations, there’ll be stalls from lots of science and engineering companies and CSIRO Energy Technology is one of them. Drop by our stall to hear about what we do, play with our piezoelectric device that uses your movements to light a bulb, see the metal plate we melted using the power of the sun, talk to some of our young researchers, and heaps more.

On the web at lunchtime tomorrow? Chat live with a solar scientist.

In the leadup to Earth Hour, which is happening this Saturday, the Newcastle Herald is teaming up with CSIRO to do a couple of live-blogging events on energy topics throughout the week. Tomorrow it’s my turn. Join us between 12:30 and 1:30 pm Australian Eastern Standard Time via The Herald. I’ll be there answering your questions on CSIRO’s solar thermal energy research, our solar-focusing heliostat arrays, how we use the sun to cool your home, and more.

[Edit, April 2: you can read what took place in the live blog via this link.]

Speaking of Earth Hour…

CSIRO is also participating in Earth Hour as an organisation. At the CSIRO Energy Centre in Newcastle we’ll be turning all non-essential electrical appliances off before leaving the office on Friday and we hope you will too. Keep an eye out for an amazing photograph of our Centre in the Newcastle Herald this weekend.
